An exquisite multi-layered ceremonial bridal dress of Pogoni, Epirus composed of cotton and wool fabrics that balance strength with refined elegance. Harmonised with the rugged mountainous landscape, it signifies protection, dignity and female prestige.
The costume unfolds through a deliberate sequence of layers crowned by the sculptural ombolia headdress embroidered with jewellery. The richly crafted garments begin with the routi, a white cotton shirt worn closest to the body, establishing purity and structure, followed by the sigouni, a thick sleeveless woollen coat that forms the backbone of the ensemble and anchors it in the material culture of Epirus. The composition is enriched with alatzas and epimanika that articulate movement and protect the hands, then drawn together by the sayakopodia belt, while additional elements such as the flokata and carefully arranged scarves add volume, texture and ceremonial presence. The lower body is completed with propodia, knitted socks adorned with embroidery, and footwear chosen from tsarouchia, markoupia or kountoures, resulting in a costume constructed with intention, balancing resilience, refinement and cultural continuity.
